I really thought when I closed the store that we'd clean it out in a week, take some stuff home and that would take me a couple of weeks to get it sorted and stored away. I must have been happy in that delusional little world!

Reality check - the store is cleared out, we sold a bunch, donated a good bit, threw enough old paperwork out to require a second, third, fourth and maybe a fifth recycling robocan (our township has robo trucks where an robotic arm comes out, picks up a huge robocan and dumps it in the recycling truck). We still haven't touched the garage yet, the front living room still could star in an episode of hoarders BUT

I tackled the wool room (formerly my oldest son's bedroom where he hasn't slept for a good 15 years) and can function in there - ok, ok somewhat, still trying to get it where everything has a place and is in that place. I need a bigger room . . .

I've cleared paths through my sewing area and had the AccuQuilt Studio churning out some kits the other morning. We're doing two shows in Oct, one in Manahawkin with Pieceful Shores Quilt Guild, here's a link for info and the second in Medford with the Berry Basket Quilters, here is a link for info, stop by and say hello!

I've yet to turn my sewing machine on and probably won't for awhile. Even I can't concentrate in the mess that used to be my sewing room, and that's saying something!

We went to Minnesota for 10 days to a family wedding and then up to the north shore with Jim's brother John and sister-in-law Julie. We had a great time. I'd never been and only seen Lake Superior in pictures. It reminded me so much of Maine. We hiked and ate our way through three or four state parks.

And we went to the MN State Fair! Wow! It was great. I'd never been to a big state fair and saw food I'd never seen on a stick. Everything was on a stick. Jim had deep fried olives wrapped in bacon - on a stick. I had corn on the cob, you guessed it, on a stick. It was fun.

I've been dyeing wool a couple times a week and that's been fun. I finally have time to experiment with new colors (or attempt new colors!)
I'm still working on the wool Watering Can Block of the month and hope to have it ready to go in January - although it's looking like that is not going to happen until Spring, but that's ok. I want it done right and it's going slower than I thought it would.
This is December's block I still have some stitching to do on it but it's getting there. I thought I'd get so much stitching done on vacation - HA! I did stitch by the lake one afternoon and that was perfect.

Tell me what you've been working on! Miss seeing all your faces, I hope to see you at one of the October shows.
If you had asked me when the store was still open how long did I think it would take to clear what was left over, I would have guessed two weeks. HA! Here we are at the end of week 3 and there is still stuff in the shop.

We've made big headway and there really is not much left in there but the fact that we've been doing this for three weeks and my house is still a hoarders paradise, it's enough to make me scream.

We did get rid of, opps, donate a whole lot of stuff to a local school's fashion program. The grandboys helped Jim and I bring it over. I'm hoping the students in the program are thrilled with the things we brought and make all kinds of great things with it all. (And I hope they send me pictures I can share!)
It's been awhile since I blogged - funny how the last blog was in 2016 and all about dyeing wool for the shop! Here we are two years later, the shop is closed and I'm still dyeing wool.

Once the shop closed on the 29th, the hard work started - clearing out the shop and finding somewhere at home to put all this stuff. I knew it would take a few weeks but I had absolutely, positively NO CLUE how much work this would be. Jim and I are exhausted, bone weary and moaning every time we have to get up after sitting down for more than three minutes. It's not just the store that has to be dealt with, first you have to find/make room in the house, garage and sewing studio! That means cleaning out a bedroom for the new "wool room" (who would of thought all my wool supplies would not fit in a 12' x 10' bedroom????), clear out closets (where did all this stuff come from???) shift things around in the pantry (exactly how old is some of this food?), it's even gotten to the point where I had to clean out my kitchen junk drawer! Now I'm not only dealing with stuff from the shop, but also stuff from the house. Ugh. And the garage . . . . let's just say the car will not be going in the garage this winter.

So Saturday I had a mini meltdown and told Jim not one more thing comes home until we get a handle on all the stuff piled everywhere here. We could absolutely star on that Hoarders TV program. No pictures of this mess will ever exist so you won't find one here or anywhere! My days this week have been moving/shifting stuff into permanent homes. Except I keep changing those permanent homes . . . . And two of those days the dyes pots were bubbling away in the middle of all this madness.

Here is an example of what my week is like - trying to get one thing accomplished and it leads to four other things. I looked at the living room and thought, why are the flannel quilts still out? Then thought why do I have EIGHT flannel lap quilts? So I decided this I can do and get done now. (HA!) I gathered up the quilts and started towards the linen closet, while walking down the hall, I thought, when was the last time these were washed? Detour to the laundry room. While the washing machine is working on the first couple, I decide to check out the linen closest. No way they are all going to fit in there, it needs to be cleaned out. Two black garbage bags destined for Goodwill later, the closet is practically empty and ready for the flannel quilts, although I will probably regret the extent of my downsizing. Of course I've now added two huge garbage bags to the front living room, which is already overflowing with stuff . . . .

My two oldest came home last weekend and tore down fabric shelves, moved van loads of stuff home, mumbled under their breath about just taking stuff to the dump and did in 24 hours what would have taken us five days. Jeremy, Halla and Selma come home tomorrow (add baby proofing and washing the kitchen floor to today's to do list!) and hopefully, fingers crossed, everything will be out of the store when they leave Sat afternoon.

And sew it goes!
It's not as primitive as Fern would like, though I do dye colors that make her swoon and yesterday I challenged her to do something more primitive. I like the bright, clear colors but I dye the more muted ones to keep Fern and other primitive lovers happy. I just mailed these off to another friend . . . it was hard to let some of them go!

Tourists are starting to arrive at the Jersey Shore as we are unofficially into summer here. School isn't out yet, graduations are happening (my sweet Nathan had his "moving on" ceremony this week from pre-school. Can't believe he'll start kindergarten in September!), and the ocean is still a bit cool - but we're ready for the BEACH!

Speaking of the beach, we've been working like crazy to get samples done for our summer display called Beach Glamping. It will go up the 23rd and you'll have to come see it! My friend Kelly Ann who has a shop in Virginia and I have been egging each other on with our glamping display plans (glamping is a glamorous/vintagy form of camping). I think she's gone a little crazier than I have but we did both draw the line at renting a vintage camper or even making up a fake front of one! I have a few hints about what will be in the display further in the newsletter but I will say, I'm having a blast collecting things for my camping at the beach display.

The Row By Row Experience™ starts for 50 states and 9 Canadian provinces and territories on June 21st. 2700+ stores will be participating this summer and every one of them will be handing out a free row. We'll be unveiling our sample on the 23rd since we will be closed to celebrate Father's Day on the 21st and we're always closed on Mondays anyway. So we'll be a few days later than the official kick off but plan to come see our row and our display too! And to plan your trip, here is a map showing ALL of the participating shops - click here. Keep clicking on the plus sign on the right to make the map more detailed and you can unclick the areas you don't want to see on the left. Have fun!

New classes are up on the website. Click here to see. There is still room in Pat Sloan's workshops the first week in October, call the shop for details or click here.

Don't forget to check our Facebook page every Monday night to see what our weekly special is as we celebrate turning TWENTY all month. This week all machine feet and accessories are 25% off! Sorry, we are not allowed to mail feet or accessories.

Also remember that every $10 you spend in the shop or online gets you a ticket for our Sample Auction (with TWENTY samples up for auction!). Click here for details.

The ConKerr Cancer gang will be here this month on Saturday the 27th. Come sew, press, cut or all three - they love to have help! Fabric or finished pillowcase donations are greatly appreciated also.

I alternated between thinking I was out of my mind with all these blocks and being excited get make the quilt. The jury is still out on whether I'm crazy or not, but I'm hoping next March I'll be posting a picture of my completed Dear Jane quilt!

A comment by a friend on Facebook this morning about copper cookie cutters sent me sliding down the time warp hole of Pinterest this morning. I've been thinking about how to display my cookie cutters for a couple of years but have never come up with anything so they stay in the big tin on top of the china closet and in the drawer of the hutch. Two pictures on Pinterest caught my eye - one display them artfully in an old mixing bowl and the other on an antique scale. I liked both and thought I have both those things!

Down to the basement to dig out the Fairbanks #1 scale that my grandmother let me have out of her basement when I was 12. She could not imagine why I wanted it and neither could I, I just knew I did. Grammy Lint told me it was from her father's general store in Nova Scotia so I hauled it home and my father promptly claimed it, or tried to anyway. He thought it would be great for down the wharf to weigh lobsters and my mom said no, it would rust. So it sat under her china closet until I cleaned out the house three summers ago and took it home. Then it went into my basement!

This morning it came up, was cleaned up a bit and put on the vintage school desk in my kitchen. I happily dug out my Christmas cookie cutters and after seeing them all in one place, I have more than I thought . . . can you say addiction???? I brought out a vintage mixing bowl and put special cookie cutters into it with red, glass Christmas balls. I put my two blooming Christmas cactus back on the table and had my cookie cutter display. Not as artful as the pinterest ones, but I like it.

I remember making butter cookies with my mom and her letting us decorate them, the table, ourselves and some of the kitchen floor. I did it with my kids, my kids did it with my Mom and now I'm doing it with the grandbabies. Traditions - love them.

Looking at the scale reminds me of Grammy Lint. And Grampy Lint as he wrapped everything in newspaper and there is still newspaper stuck to the bottom of the scale (and I'm leaving it there). The cookie cutters remind me of mom and the bowl has memories in it too. Biscuit cutters from Nana Sawyer. Two cookie cutters - a lobster and a lobster boat - I had made to make my brother Sooky cookies for Christmas. And if he sees this, he'll probably call and ask why he hasn't gotten any in years . . . . A loon one from Minnesota.

Traditions - love them.

Yesterday I decided that I needed to be realistic and move our display of Christmas projects if I wanted anyone to have time to make them. So I did my usual wandering around my house, garage and attic wishing I had time to go antiquing for all the neat stuff that I'd like to use in this display, and finally decided the display needed to be put together with what I had already and to just get on with it.

Into my car went a round table my grandmother had started to strip to put her usual white paint on but felt "faint of heart" (this coming from a nurse who worked until she was 70 something delivering babies in Salem, Mass) and it sat in her cellar until I claimed it for my first apartment. It's still unfinished . . .
Anyway, I love the height and shape of the table for displays so I grabbed a rectangular green table cloth to throw over it, a mason, jar, some silverware and set off for the shop. The inspiration for this display is all Terry Atkinson - she posted that picture of the napkins and silverware in a Mason jar last week.

I unloaded my goodies and proceeded to make a mess of the front of the store shifting Fall out of the way and combining the two current Christmas displays into one.

I put the table out, covered it with the green tablecloth - ugh - and thought to myself, this is a fabric store with beautiful fabrics, sewing machines and sergers - just make one! Ok, I remember something a fabric rep had said to me - use wide backings for home dec. So I wander over to our extra wide backing section and find a perfect green. (Now if I were planning this blog ahead of time, I'd have taken a picture of our selection of wide backings!)

I impress and confuse Fern and Ellen as I measure the table, figure out the simple math and rip (oh the horrors!) the wide backing to get it on grain. The only way square fabric that wide without a HUGE table to lay it out, is to rip it - plus its easier! I cut my circle, gather up my supplies, decide it will be faster with a serger and a gathering foot, and head to the classroom.

Thirty minutes later - with a few mishaps - out comes this:

I collect vintage mason jars. I love them and I have no idea why. I've been looking for the green ones that came out this year but haven't managed to snag any yet. And this is the first year that I canned in a long time, so I hauled out my trusty, newer mason jars out of the garage and canned tomatoes and made butter pickles. The old ones, I just love to look at and have a pinterest
Cheeky little thing but she remembered and when I moved into my first apartment - that Hoosier cabinet and treadle came out of her cellar and into my kitchen, along with all the mason jars!

I have more but with the grands, not all are out. The grands know this is a NO TOUCH zone. (I told them I'd cry if they broke anything and that seems to be working!)
Terry Atkinson posted this on her Facebook page this morning - this is just too danged cute! The napkins were a project from her Groovy Girls Sewing Club we ran about four years ago, so if you belonged to that, you have the pattern already. If you didn't belong, Terry has turned it into a pattern and I just put in an order for some! We'll be using this as part of our Christmas display that will go up in the next week or so and we'll have the patterns for you.
I'm back from Quilt Market and since today it's cold and rainy at the Jersey Shore, I'll just say Houston was 86 and sunny last Saturday. I spent most of that day indoors working but the walk to and from the convention center was lovely.

Today I thought I'd share pictures of part of the quilt show at market for an indoor rainy day quilt show!
This was the Ruby Jubilee of Quilt Market and they celebrated by have a red and white quilt show. Here are just a few of the quilts that were displayed. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Congratulations to all the quilt makers and to Quilts Inc for a show stopping, stunning display. I enjoyed it immensely and didn't even get to see it all as market closed before I'd finished.
For some reason it's been a very long time since I blogged. Life is crazy here at the shore and I seem to have let the blog fall by the wayside. My friend Kelly Ann, (aka KA) from Kelly Ann's Quilt Shop in VA, sortof, kindof made me realize that I hadn't updated this blog in quite awhile by admitting how long it's been since she updated hers. That made me wonder when the last time I'd written . . . . whoa baby, it's been awhile!

I've been sewing - not a big surprise - watching grandbabies - not a big surprise either and traveling. According to my staff, I'm rarely in the shop but I feel like I'm there all the time. Someone is exaggerating and I think it's probably all of us!

Alaska was WONDERFUL. If you get the chance to go, don't hesitate.

Our latest trip was to Gloucester last weekend. A quick in and out trip - we arrived at lunch time on Saturday, crammed as much as we could into what remained of Saturday and all of Sunday, and then headed home on Monday. I realized in August I hadn't been home since Mom's funeral, so I blocked out Columbus Day weekend then and there and Jim and I headed home.

My brother and sister-in-law are as crazy as we are so we get along really well - although my older brother is more of a curmudgeon than I am (I'm sure he says the same about me), we do enjoy hanging out.

Fried dough like Nana used to make

I got to eat my favorite foods - linguicia at the Azorean Restaurant Sat night and fried dough at the Topsfield Fair on Sunday afternoon. I closed my eyes, took my first bite and it was after church at Nana's any Sunday morning of my childhood. She made the best fried dough and her Sunday kitchen was always full of cousins, aunts, uncles, great aunts and uncles with at least 10 people talking at once.

But first on Sunday, Laurel, Jim and I (the curmudgeon stayed home) spent three hours at an antique flea market enjoying ourselves immensely. Laurel has a thing for glassware - seriously, her glassware addiction is about level with my fabric addiction! - so I had a wonderful time trying to tempt her with anything and everything glass.
My bag was as full of hers as I found sewing treasures! The box of thread is from the Marvel Thread company in Worcester, MA, a total guess at age is from the 30s or 40s. The big wooden spool has been updated with new dowels for spools to stand on - I just thought it was cool. The sewing basket is filled with vintage sewing notions and it's a cool shape to add to my collection! How is it you look around and realize that you've acquired a pretty big collection of something????

I also bought two handfuls of wooden thread spools to put in my vintage store spool displays. I have two and they're pretty cool but they need more thread to fill them. Why I only bought two handfuls and not the whole box is a good question!

What have you started to collect without realizing it? I'm thinking Jim needs to put up shelves around my sewing room so I can put all this stuff in one place. But then again, do I really want to know how much I have??????

Until next time.

Do you all work on one project at a time? More than one, say two of them at the same time? More? Three? Four? FIVE? I have to admit, I have more than three going on right now but less than five. I think. Ok, maybe six. They all tend to blend together after awhile!

I'm working on a lap sized quilt for the next Stash Attack, a secret until April 1st, and I've said it before, but this is my favorite! Lots of pieces so I'm using it as a leader and ender project while working on the shop hop quilt, a secret until the end of March. What's Leaders and Enders you ask? Leaders and enders (L&Es) - not my term there is a book about it - are pieces that you put together and sew after the pieces you really want to sew are stitched. That way you don't have to cut threads in between the pieces. A lot of sewers use a scrap to sew off onto but that seems to be a waste to my "thrifty" New England soul - if I'm going to stitch on something, it's going to be used for something instead of just thrown away!

So I used the Stash Attack pieces as Leaders and Enders for doing the Shop Hop Quilt, now I'm using the next Strip Club quilt as L&Es for the Stash Attack project ( and I slipped three baby quilt tops into the rotation on my "Snew Day" Monday and used them for L&Es) and when the Stash Attack top is done, I'll slip another one into the rotation that's patiently waiting for a pieced border. I won't admit to how many are in line to be worked on . . .

I know there are sewers out there who can only work on one thing at a time but I must have some type of ADD because I can't for some reason. I like seeing all the different colors of the current projects on the sewing table, cutting table and ironing board. I just wish my design wall was big enough to put two projects up on it at a time.

So what about you? One project at a time or mulitples?

I whipped up a sample of the Barnegat Light pattern that Debra at Zebra Patterns designed just for us! Very cool! A class is happening with this sample in March but we will have kits available this coming week too.

I'm working on the shop hop quilt too- kindof designing on the fly. I know what I want it to look like, just having a hard time getting what's in my head to come out and down to my fingers to cut and sew. I'm a little further along with it than this picture shows and it's getting there but I think there is more ripping in my future! I started out with my squares too big and now have this long skinny thing. Not good. I need to rip and finagle.

I'm also working on the next Stash Attack Quilt, this will be number 6! No pictures yet. And I know I say this every time but I think this one just might be my favorite. It's smaller blocks but they're so danged cute! I'm using the pieces of these cutie blocks as leaders and enders while doing the shop hop quilt.

Do you do that? Work on more than one thing at a time? I do. I tend to get bored with something pretty easily and my mind wanders, then I make mistakes and I'm ripping out. By having a couple of things going at the same time, I don't get bored, it keeps me "sharp". I'm usually designing something in my head while stitching something else, or working out a problem with one project while working on another. The shop hop quilt sat on the design wall for about a week until I figured out what was bothering me about it. And I figured it out while machine quilting the Barnegat Light project.

I'm also working on two projects I started at Kaye's College last month. Both are now sitting while I try to figure out what to do about borders. One I know what I have to do, dang that Karen Montgomery for putting the idea of a pieced border in my head!, I just need time to sit down and do it. It's on the list. The other also needs borders and I need to hurry up with that one since we've cut the kits already! Yikes.

Good thing I work best under pressure - how about you?

Till next time.

As I get ready for the big move in the sewing room, most of it is trashed enough to make working in there impossible even for me. While I admit, I am totally comfortable in a good amount of clutter and chaos, my sewing space has surpassed even my comfort zone. And now with two grand babies sniffling and sick, the arrival of said strapping sons and son-in-law to move the furniture around is in jeopardy. I'm not sure how much longer I can deal with the mess, so I've been staying out of the sewing room except to pack for my retreat.

Which all leads to me doing a little bit of this and a little bit of that.

Austin Lights

We cut kits this past summer for this project and they, and the fully quilted sample, languished while waiting for me to update the pattern. I orginially wrote the pattern in 2008. It needed to be updated to my new format, so I did that. Then we found a mistake in the test print for the sample. So it came back to me to correct and went on the to do pile. For months. Whats really silly is the changes took me less than 15 minutes when I finally sat down & did them.

What finally made me do it? When I took down the Christmas samples in the shop, I ended up with a HUGE blank wall behind the cutting table. While looking around for something to hang in that space, I saw the finished Austin Lights quilt folded on top of the kits. I hung it, knowing it would force me to go home and actually finish the pattern. It worked.

Big plans!

I'm lucky enough to be going to Kaye England's College for Shop Owners next week (in warm & sunny Florida baby!) and I've been busily cutting out projects to do while I'm there. Kaye is coming to do an event for us in September and I want to have kits available. So I've lined up six samples that need to be made. I've pawned one off on Fern, err, Fern volunteered to make one of them. Three are projects I started at previous Kaye retreats and never finished - there's that procrastination again! And I pre-cut two so I could take them with me to work on, along with the three UFOs.

I'm crazy enough to think I will finish at least three of the planned projects . . . .hmmm, might be time for a reality check here! But the planning is so much fun!

Aubrey's Quilt Pattern

When I buy fabric for the shop, it could be 6-8 months before it actually arrives. I write notes to myself on my order sheets of what plans I have for the fabric so I don't look at it blankly when it arrives & the staff asks me where to put it in the shop and does it need anything cut off it? A pretty line arrived this week and Barb said to me, it says make a girly baby quilt with this. What pattern are we using? I think I need to write better notes because I looked that fabric and thought - huh?

So when one can't quilt in her messy sewing space, she moves to the computer and designs something. This is one of my favorite blocks and what I used to design granddaughter Aubrey's quilt. But of course that would have been too easy to just use that pattern as it was . . . . oh no, I wanted scrappy which means more blocks and less open space so the blocks needed to be bigger - back to the computer drawing board.

This is a computerized version of the latest version of my Aubrey's Quilt pattern. Scrappy, more blocks, larger blocks and a new color palette. I really like it.

Now to find someone to make it . . .

Sewing room is still messy and if grand babies are still under the weather, it's going to be that way for a while longer. Until then, it'll be me doing a little of this, and a little of that.

Until next time.

BRRRRRRR! It's a balmy 14 degrees here this morning with about 8" of newly fallen snow. That deserves another BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! The best part about all this? We can't go out! Jim will be out doing his favorite thing - shoveling snow (the man is crazy but I guess shoveling as a sport is from growing up in Minnesnowta) or playing with his snowblower and clearing out the neighbors when he's done with our place. Meanwhile back at the ranch, I'll be putzing around in my sewing room - my favorite snow day activity!

After what seems like forever, I'm finally getting ready to move my sewing space around. In the planning stages for years, I'm FINALLY ready for the strapping sons and son-in-law to help move everything out and then bring just the furniture back in. I'm sure there will be hoarding comments mumbled many times during this adventure but I will rise above it all and ignore them - they just don't understand a fabric stash.

The big day is the 12th, kids are coming home to have the annual family picture done and they've been given instructions to come with junky clothes and at least an hour to spare. With five of us helping, it's entirely possible to empty the space and then just bring the furniture back in & put it in it's new configuration. Right? I'm going to move all the stuff I can before they arrive to move the project along and most importantly, cut down on the hoarder mumbling.

I just want everything out and all the big stuff Jim and I can't move ourselves back in. Then I want everyone to go away and so I can putz and arrange everything else myself. Of course I leave for the Kaye England retreat on the 16th so I will only have a few days of putzing. Nope, not going to get that all done before I leave!

I wonder if Jim has realized that all this stuff is going to be moved into his workshop? I doubt it and I know he hasn't figured out that it won't be all out before I leave for a week either!

Till next time.
Busy, busy, busy! Holy smokes, where does time vanish? I think it has something to do with running around like a chicken with your head cut off (who came up with that awful scenario?) and not noticing that life is happening all around you. STOP! SMELL THE ROSES! Ha!
We've had grandbaby birthdays - Nathan turned 3 (how did that happen????), Colin turned 2 and Aubrey turned 1. I made mention that next year we would not have grandchildren aged 4, 3, 2 and 1 and not one of my children paid any attention to me. :0)
I've been quilting up a storm and putting on the dreaded bindings - three this week. I really think that must be a record! If I'd get off the computer, it would be 4! Here's pictures of a couple that I've completed this week.
And the big time sucker has been moving everything out of the storage unit and into the garage. When we decided to move the shop last year, we only had about 6 weeks to do it. That sounds like a lot of time but look around your house, imagine it's 5800 square feet stuffed with stuff, how long would it take you to pack it all up NEATLY? See that was the sticker, packing it so we could find things again. The staff did a Herculean job but it was still boxes and boxes and more boxes that needed to be sorted through.

After moving, I didn't want to ever look at all those boxes again so they sat in the storage unit waiting. Well the time finally came as we've sifted, sorted, pitched and stored things until we didn't need that big of a storage unit anymore, so we decided to downsize. A "slight" change of a quoted price of a smaller unit decided that we wouldn't use ANY storage unit but would put it all in the garage.

If I ever decided to do something like that again, would someone please put me out of my misery BEFORE it happens?

Two strapping sons, moved it all in about three hours. Piles of stuff all over the garage. Ugh. Shelves were set up, bunches and bunches of clear storage boxes were purchased and almost everything is now in bins, on shelves, neatly labeled in the garage.

And the car might actually fit in there!

Until next time.

Home again, home again! We spent last weekend in Gloucester for Courtney and Brian's wedding and seeing family. It was kind of strange staying at a motel when you go home but with Mom's house sold and Sooky's house overflowing, a hotel it was.
We stayed at the Vista hotel overlooking Good Harbor Beach. This was the view from our balcony - not too hard to wake up to! This is one of the most popular beaches in Gloucester and it was PACKED all weekend.
Jim and I took a walk on Sunday night around sunset to escape the heat. We used to do that when our oldest son was small and it was so hot. All the natives head to the beach after supper to cool off. We didn't have air conditioning back then and my Mom's house and my brother's don't have it either so it was REALLY nice to go back to the air-conditioned hotel room!

My Mom has a line up of pictures in her room. So we decided that the six of us - my two brothers, sister in laws, Jim and I - needed to take a picture since we were all dressed up, so she could have one of the six of us gussied up.

I went around taking pictures of lobster buoys and pots for a pattern that's rattling around in my head. My older brother thinks I've lost my mind every time I tell him I'm looking for something. One year I was looking for portholes I knew were around my mom's somewhere. When I asked him, the look he gave me was priceless. I did find them but haven't done anything with that idea yet. This time I was looking for old buoys, wooden ones. He had a couple stashed here and there that I took pictures of. He did tell me where I could find a couple of walls of buoys around town, so I played tourist and held up traffic to take some pictures. The natives just love when tourists do that . . .
My niece Courtney married her Brian in a gorgeous, simple ceremony on a pretty Saturday afternoon where the weather cooperated and it wasn't 100 degrees in the shade. It was fun to see them start their lives together, mortify my nephews by singing along with the songs from the 70s the DJ was playing, watch my nieces and nephew be great parents to my great nieces and nephews and dance with Jim to an oldie but goodie.

It was nice to see cousins, brothers, sister in laws, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and my Mom. It's true that you don't realize how much you miss home, until you go home and then you have to leave. Gloucester will always be "home".

Well it's been awhile since I've written, life just seems to march along at a steady pace doesn't it? So what have I been up to? Well there was the trip to see my Mom in Massachusetts, the quilting cruise to the Caribbean, a trip out to Minnesota for Jim's Dad's funeral and a vacation to Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks topped off with a stay in San Francisco for Bernina University - phew! You could say we've been traveling fools this year. And we're home for a total of 7 days before heading off to my niece's wedding in Massachusetts next week and then off to Janome Institute in Las Vegas in late August. I'm tired just thinking about it!

I don't know what it is about vacations but after about 10 days, I'm ready to sleep in my own bed. We were gone 12 to California and while the parks were absolutely gorgeous and I love getting together with friends and colleagues at conventions, I'm ready for my own bed, my own routine and puttering in my garden when 10 days have gone by. Ten seems to be the magic number for sleeping away from home!

My sewing room still isn't done . . . .the little room is perfect, the big room, well lets just say it's more organized but it's still a mess and my cutting table is probably worse than when I started.

All that mess is a direct result of my designing and tweaking more patterns lately. My trusty graph paper is always with me and I have EQ7 on the lap top. I spent a wonderfully relaxing afternoon on the patio at our rented condo in the foothills of Sequoia National Park scribbling on graph paper and figuring in EQ and came up with three new patterns that you'll see later this summer.

Waves & Whitecaps

Before I left for CA, I finally took a pattern that's been floating around in my head and on scraps of paper for a little over a year and figured it out, sewed it and sent it off to be quilted. Waves & Whitecaps is the result and I'm really pleased with the way it turned out. I used two of the batiks I designed for the shop and two blocks to make the pattern. I love when two blocks form a third pattern!

The sample was supposed to be queen sized for my bed but time got in the way and I ended up doing a lap size. Either way, I love it!

How about you? Are you sewing more this summer?

Until next time
I really didn't fall off the face of the earth but I might have been hanging off the edge for a bit. I went to Kaye's College in Las Vegas at the end of January and had a wonderful time - until the day after I got home and I started to feel funny. The "kid" - young man - on the plane next to me sniffled the whole way out to Vegas and I really thought I'd dodged getting sick. HA! Then there were people getting sick at Kaye's College - including Kaye! - and I felt ok the whole time I was there.

Two projects almost done!

I had a wonderful time sewing, chatting, learning. Who can complain about 5 days of non stop sewing? Not me! AND I actually finished two quilt tops!

I came home Friday night and was tired but fine, Sat I started feeling iffy and by Sunday I was in bed - fever, chills, coughing- UGH! Of course being me - did I go to the doctor? NOOOOOO. Not for 10 days and then just because I was sick of coughing. First round of antibiotic and cough medicine with codeine.

A week after that I'm STILL coughing, 2nd round of antibiotic and a stronger cough medicine with enough scary warnings on it, I didn't take it. Did I mention I don't like taking medicines?

I'm finally finishing up the antibiotics - which were HUGE by the way - and the cough is almost gone, as long as I don't laugh, then all bets are off.

So I haven't touched the sewing area. I'm still half way done. BUT Jeremy's birthday is next weekend and my grand plan is to have all the kids help move furniture around while they're here celebrating. They don't know it yet and SHHHHH, don't tell them or they'll find excuses not to come. Sara's birthday is the weekend after Jeremy's, what I don't get them to move the first weekend, I can con them into moving the second weekend. Of course by then they'll be on to me . . . .

Till next time.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 14.0pt;">The unfortunate part of all this is that one must clean a portion of the space before one can start organizing that space. And looking at my space, it was almost overwhelming to figure out where to start . . .

I had a wonderful time sorting through bins of stuff thrown together - fancy fabrics, bits of lace, beads, fancy buttons, charms, crystals, ribbon, trims - a ridiculous amount of stuff jammed all in three big tubs. Kind of, sort of, semi organized but still a mess. I had to ruthlessly take myself in hand to sort rather than start stitching . . .

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 13.5pt;">So in the middle
of all this craziness called holiday preparation, I've decided I can't stand my
sewing room one more minute. It probably could qualify for that hoarders
show and while I know this will stun the few people allowed to see it, I am
slowly but surely cleaning it up. Why now? I have NO IDEA!
Just got to a point where I can't stand it anymore. So I am busily
buying clear containers to organize and put stuff in. So far I've done
the embellishments and that was really fun sorting through it all, then I moved
to buttons - whew I have A LOT of buttons, more than I thought I had, and I'm
now into the notions.
<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 13.5pt;">

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 13.5pt;">I think the problem with all of this is, I've
inherited my grandmothers' sewing paraphernalia, two of my great
aunts, my mom's and my mother-in-law's along with the assorted vintage sewing
baskets I've picked up and customers have given me. I have quite the
collection of vintage sewing stuff plus all the stuff I've brought home . . . .
and I can't bring myself to throw any of it out. My Nana and great aunts
cut all the buttons off old clothing and strung them together on string to save
them. How can you throw that history out????? But this has all lead
to a room that doesn't function at all. My friend Jerry has an expression
- it looks like the walls threw up, and yes, that's exactly what my sewing room
looks like, except it was a particularly nasty flu.
<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 13.5pt;">

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 13.5pt;">Pictures you ask?
Before pictures? HA! NEVER! Not going to happen.
I will show pictures on the blog though - the areas that I've cleaned up
but no before pictures exist, no will they ever . . . . Stay tuned for more of the trials and tribulations of shoveling out my sewing room.
The shop is moved and we're settled in. We keep rearranging things but that's normal for any retail store. There are a few things we can't find, a few things that need to go to the storage unit and a few things that need to come out of the storage unit but I have a feeling that is always going to be the case!

We spent most of the month of August finding things that we KNEW we had and trying to figure out the best place to put office supplies and stuff. And since we all have opinions on where the best place would be and everyone has a different idea of what's best . . . . well use your imagination to figure out how organized THAT was! We finally worked it out and it's only every once in awhile that we think, WHERE IS THAT?
Miss Aubrey Michelle Welch joined our family on September 14th. She belongs to my oldest son James and his wife, Stefanie and she's a cutie! She weighed in at a very dainty 5 lbs 11 ozs. She makes Nathan & Colin look like Amazons!

Classes & clubs started up, shows started happening and we settled into fall.
I'm sure you've seen all the news reports or lived through it yourself so I won't elaborate but to just say, the stories are horrifying and so sad at the same time. The store is fine, our family is fine but we know friends and customers who have lost everything or almost everything. Our local high school is still being used as a shelter, so much of the shore is just gone.

There is a desperate need for blankets and quilts. Our local Project Linus coordinator is taking donations to filter out through the Red Cross and her contacts. Here is Hillary's information - you can read more information by clicking here.
No matter what anyone tells you, moving is NOT fun. Choosing the paint colors, imagining what the new space will look like? That is fun. The actual physical work of moving - not fun.

Boxes, boxes, boxes . . . .EVERYWHERE!

Everything is IN the new space. Things that aren't going to stay, are in the new space. Let's just say the new space is more than a little overfull. Today we're renting a storage locker. Yes, I'm becoming one of those people who has WAY too much stuff and no place to put it. The house is full. The oversized two car garage is full. The store is full and the storeroom is PACKED. And there are still boxes everywhere in the store. With stuff in them. Lots of stuff in them. 1200 square feet of storage space does NOT fit into 400 square feet no matter how hard you try.

All that said, the new store is shaping up and will look great after a few visits to the storage unit! I love the paint colors, Jim is building a new checkout/cutting area, the floors are GORGEOUS, all the fabric fits! (YAY!) and notions, patterns and books are starting to be put out. Samples go up tomorrow.

We've been working really hard to get ready. The staff thinks I'm crazy, more so than usual, but we will be open at 10am on Wednesday, August 1st! Stop in and see us!
Yes, we're doing that thing we said we would never do again - move. QP is moving about 2 miles away from our current location. I write this with a mixture of anticipation and dread. I'm excited for a new place, a new look, new possibilities BUT

Think about moving your sewing room. Now think about moving your sewing room PLUS everything in it multiplied by 10 or 20 or 30 times! Every bolt, thread spool, notion, pattern, book, then think about all the fixtures we have . . . ugh HORRORS!

We're not going far, just to 918 Lacey Road. The space is a bit smaller but more manageable for us - no lawn to mow, no air conditioning to baby, no building upkeep to manage at all. Yes, I might even get time to sew for me again! Ok, that's not going to happen any time soon!

So Jim and the boys are moving walls, cutting openings in walls, moving doors, and getting the new space ready for the finishing guys to come. Lots happening at the new place.

Meanwhile at the current store, we're having a MOVING SALE! (I really don't want to pack up and move everything!) All items (books, notions, patterns, fq packs, fabric, machine accessories, software) marked with a suitcase tag or sticker are 35% off. All floor model sewing machine and sewing furniture are on sale.

Stay tuned to the emails for details (click here to sign up)

Stay tuned - there's always something happening at QP!
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16873113045865617992noreply@blogger.com1
